Nigerians especially the ones on social media were aghast this morning when the wife of the Nigerian president, Aisha Buhari posted on her verified Facebook and Instagram accounts a press release purportedly from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to the effect that the old N200, N500 and N1,000 bank notes would continue to circulate as legal tender in the country till May 1, 2023.

The news which contradicted the directive by the president, Muhammadu Buhari that only the old N200 would be recirculated by the CBN generated no small furore with many Nigerians wondering if the social media handles of the outspoken first lady had been hacked or of she was working against her husband.
This will not be the first time the first lady would be publicly contradicting her husband, the president’s policies. Last year in an interview she apologised to Nigerians over the abysmal performance of her husband and their party, the All Progressive Congress (APC).

However, a few hours after, the CBN came out to debunk the press release as fake and reinforcing the earlier pronouncement by the president that only the old N200 would be recirculated. The CBN also urged media practitioners to verify information before publishing.
