War has humbled the Ukrainians
The conflict in Ukraine is merely a fight between Vladimir Putin, United States of America and her North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) allies which may end up in a nuclear conflagration destroying a large part of the world as we know it if it is escalated, says Dr. Sunday Adelaja.
Adelaja, the founder and snr Pastor of the Embassy of the Blessed Kingdom of God for all Nations, based in Kiev, Ukraine should know. He has lived in Ukraine for over 30 years and is one of the most influential social voices in the country. More so, he pastored the largest church in Europe and is a fierce critic of Russian President, Vladimir Putin.
“We need to pray to avert a third world war,” he said during an online interview with the Network of African Christian Journalists on Sunday. “The Russians are ready to use nuclear weapons and we need to pray that God will give all the people involved the wisdom not to escalate this matter to a 3rd world war.”
Adelaja himself has had a fair run against Putin who shut down over 100 branches of his church in Russia and banned him from the country. In the current conflict in Ukraine, Adelaja who once pastors the largest church in Europe, has lost his home, his church now on the run.
Interestingly, despite his loses, Adelaja said people should not be quick to side with either party because both have a point to make.
Adelaja: “I tell people not to take any side in this conflict because aside the propaganda against Putin, he believes he is fighting for Christianity and the restoration of the traditional values which he thinks is being corrupted by Western liberalism.

“Putin thinks it is not fair to have one polar world, where one country dictates what I going to happen to others. The US is intervening in nations to allow gay marriage and all kinds of things. Putin is against that.
“Putin is very angry that you can give license to satanic churches with Christian churches. He says if we allow these things to go on, the world will be turned upside down. It is one of the many things he is fighting against.
“When Ukraine started making moves to join NATO, he believes that this western influence would be coming to the very doorsteps of Russia. Because Ukraine and Russia are basically the same people and many in Russia view Kiev as the birthplace Russia just as you have Ile-Ife as the cradle of Yoruba.

“So it is very painful for them that the West is influencing Ukraine. And despite my fight with Putin, I must admit there are some truths in what he is saying. That the centre of influence must be more than one.
“Putin is seeing this as a new world order, he said Christianity is what brought civilisation and it cannot be put down, don’t be in a hurry to demonise Putin, could God be using him to stop a greater evil?
“I tell people not to demonise any side because you don’t know what God will use this war to do.”
Racism in Ukraine
Adelaja says reports of racism in Ukraine are not new and he has been fighting it for over 30 years. Ukrainians considered themselves better than anyone else but the war has humbled them as they found themselves in a situation they never expected.

“I have been fighting racism in Ukraine because they didn’t see it as racism. They feel it is their country and they should come first, next is their animals and then if there is space any other person could come in.
“When Syrian refugees came to Ukraine, they complained, during the global protest against George Floyd killing, they also complained about Black Lives Matter. But I think this war has broken them, war has a way of breaking the character of nations.”
Africans should take advantage of the war
African countries should not be too quick to take sides in the ongoing Russia/Ukraine conflict but should rather abstain, says Adelaja.
“Africa should remain neutral and take advantage of this crisis, use it to develop yourself. Now there is wheat shortage, we should be investing in wheat farms in large quantities.
“The whole of Europe is looking for gas now, Nigeria has lots of it but we don’t have the tube to transfer it, now is the time to build it, we should use this opportunity to develop ourselves,” he concluded.
