Kano state still retained its number one spot as the most populated state in the country, according to the National Population Commission, NPC, 2022 population estimate.
The Commission is expected to carryout national headcount before the end of the year, 16 years after the last census, which was conducted in 2006.
NPC estimated that the population of Kano will hit 15,462,177 in 2022.
The Commission also placed Bayelsa State at the lowest rung of the population ladder with the estimated figure of 2,537,375 for 2022.
This is contained in the Nigeria Population Projections and Demographic Indicators (July 2020).
The breakdown of the Indicators showed that the working population of Kano State for 2022 is estimated to be 8,090,109 while dependent population that is (14 years and below (7,035,805) and 65 years and above (336,263) ).
The Indicators added that the estimated population of Kano for 2022 increased by 404,462 when compared to the previous year.
According to the Indicators, Lagos and Katsina followed Kano with an estimated population of 13,491,804 and 10,368,483 respectively.
Bayelsa state with the lowest estimated population for 2022 recorded a fall in its dependent population that is (14 years and below (991,258) as against 2021 (997,843).
Across the geographical zones, the Indicators showed that the estimated population for 2022 was highest in the North West with 57,134,799, followed by the South West with 41,191,986.
The South East zone had the lowest with 23,488,518 compared to other zones.
