The National Population Commission, NPC says the estimated population for 2022 is 216,783,381. This is contained in the Nigeria Population Projections and Demographic Indicators (July 2020).
Meanwhile, NPC is expected to conduct a census this year, 2022. The last time the country had a headcount was in 2006, which put the country’s population at 140,431,790. According to the indicators, the working population is estimated to be 119,386,146 while the dependent population that is (14 years and below (91,244,951) and 65 years and above (6,152,284) ) is 97,397,235.
On a year-on-year basis, the indicators added that the estimated population for 2022 increased by 5,290,057. The estimated population for 2021 according to the indicators was 211, 493,324.
The indicators also estimated a rise in the dependent population, i.e 14 years and below increased by 1,286,516; while 65 years and above is expected to rise by 254,149.
Totally, the dependent population for 2022 is expected to rise by 1,540,665.
On the other hand, the projected rise in the working population is estimated at 3,749,392.
