AFCON 2021: Senegal declares national holiday

February 7, 2022

From Our Correspondent

It was the first African Cup of Nations trophy and Senegal’s president, Macky Sall is putting a no-holds bar on the celebration as he declared a national holiday to welcome the heroes back to the capital Dakar.

The public television made the announcement while also stating that the president had cut short his tour which included a trip to Egypt, Ethiopia and Comoros Island to welcome the players back to the country.

Mane: Hero for Senegal

The final witnessed a rare rivalry between Liverpool teammates, Mohammed Sallah and Sadio Mane as the later helped his country overpower Egypt to a 4-2 victory in penalties.

The Pharaohs of Egypt had held the Teranga Lions to a goalless match for 120 minutes leading to the fourth penalty decision for the Pharaohs.

Sadio Mane, undoubtedly the hero for his country Senegal stepped up with courage to take the last penalty sealing the doom for the Egyptians. This was after he had lost a penalty in open play to the unmatchable skills of the Egyptian goalkeeper Gabaski.
