Kevin Dugar was sitting in his decrepit cell, serving a 54 year term for killing Antwan Taylor, a member of the Blackstone gang in Chicago’s south side, when a letter that would change his life arrived.
It was from his identical twin brother, Karl Smith, who was also serving a life jail for a house break which left a child with a bullet in the head in 2003.
“Look Kevin, I’m beating around the bush with you on some shit I’ve been keeping a secret for years, and I have to get it off my chest before it kills me,” Karl said.
“First off, I’d like to say I’m sorry for all these years you’ve missed out of your daughter’s life and also for all the pain you’ve endured over the last decade or so. You know the case you were found guilty on and you swore you were being set up on? I know you was telling the truth … I’m the reason your life got fucked up.”
The cops, he went on to confess, had grabbed the wrong twin.
Kevin then told Karl to write to the authorities so he could apply for a retrial and be set free.
Then on tuesday, Kevin walked out of Cook County Jail, breathing the fresh air of Chicago for the first time as a free man for over 20 years.
