President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that a three-day national mourning be observed in honour of the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 others who died in a plane crash on Friday.
The mourning period would hold from Monday 24-26 May 2021. During this time, the Nigerian flag would be flown at half mast across all public buildings and residences in the country.

The President also directed that Monday 24 May be declared as work free day for members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
Buhari had come under heavy criticism for his lack of empathy and for failing to show leadership to his troops as Commander-in- Chief and lack of kindness when he refused to attend the burial of Nigeria’s number one soldier who died in active service.
