A planned attack by armed bandits and suspected Boko Haram terrorists on Magama Central Mosque in Jibia Local Government Area of Kastina State was averted by a combined team of troops from 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the Army Public Relations Director, Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, the residents had gone to observe the late night Ramadan prayers when the attack happened.
Yerima said: “The incident which occurred in the early morning hours of 10 May 2021 witnessed a large number of bandits who came firing sporadically in an attempt to disrupts the prayers and abduct innocent worshippers were forced to withdraw in disarray as they were met with overwhelming firepower from a combined team comprising troops and police personnel who were tactically deployed in the town following earlier Intelligence received on the planned attack.”
Unfortunately, the bandits on exit from Magama Mosque raided a local mosques on the outskirts of Jibia town where several persons were abducted. The combined response team also mounted a pursuit, which forced them to abandon some of the hostages while they escaped with others.
Yerima said there is an ongoing efforts to rescue the remaining abductees with the help of neighbouring military establishments including those of Niger Republic.
