The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Major General Ibrahim Attahiru was not in the list of shortlisted candidates for the position of COAS, he was however thrown up after very high level political considerations, this newspaper has learnt.
Highly placed sources said over 30 senior officers, capable of leading the Nigeria Army were pencilled down for possible replacement for former COAS, Lt General Tukur Yussuf Buratai.
However the name of the current COAS was not even featured on the list.
” Attahiru’s name was not part of the initial list of over 30 names of senior officers shortlisted,” a source said.
However, all of the names were rejected by the President’s advices and senior party members as having a lot of political bargage.
“Senior party members and some advicers believe these officers have political issues that the opposition can use against the President,so he had no choice than to look for someone else,” another source confirmed.
Ibrahim Attahiru was named as the Army Chief against the expectation of many analysts.
“Attahiru will do well even though he was not the choice of the establishment. You know what led to his redeployment from Borno and all the politics around it. But, he is a fine officer and he will work well with the new Chief of Defence Staff,” Infactng was told.
Many officers and men were jubilant at the news of the replacement of Buratai. This newspaper learnt from officers and men of the Army that while the former COAS did well in putting structures on the ground like providing the much needed accommodation for the men, he however failed in providing proper welfare, paying of allowances and emolument when due.
” That is the only place Buratai failed and that is one of the most important points. The new COAS was in the system and he knew that was one of the problems of OPLAFIYA DOLE so that is what he must tackle.
” He also knows that his tenure will not be like the last one, performance will be the only thing that would determine your continued stay in office, so he has received his marching orders and I am sure he won’t fail,” the source said.
