The President of African Development Bank (ADB), Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has cautioned against unsubstantiated allegations against the former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
In a series of tweets in support of Gowon, Adesina said, the former Head of State is a man of integrity, honesty and humility, while warning of misinformation.
A British lawmaker, Tom Tugendhat had accused Gowon of “ stealing half of Nigeria’s Central Bank,” when he was ousted from Power in 1975 coup. Tugendhat made the allegation earlier this week during a parliamentary debate on a petition seeking sanctions against Nigerian officials accused of killing peaceful protesters during the #ENDSARS protests.

Adesina tweeted: Be careful of misinformation! H.E General Yakubu Gowon, Nigeria’s former Head of State, is a man of great honour, decency, honesty, amazing simplicity, humility and integrity. A great and admirable elder statesman of Nigeria. His honesty and integrity are impeccable.”
Earlier in an interview with the BBC, General Gowon had refuted the allegation describing it as “rubbish.”
“ I don’t know where he got that rubbish from,” Gowon said during the interview. “ What the MP said was just mere ridicule and I don’t know as to where he cooked up such statement I served Nigeria as much as I could and my achievements during those years are available to everyone,” he concluded.
